About Us

Opened in May of 1961, the Heidelberg has long been a part of the fine Ann Arbor dining tradition and the long history of German influence in the town. Now under the ownership of Raymond Kouza, the Heidelberg was built by Fritz Kochendorfer, who owned the establishment until the late 1990's.

The Heidelberg features three floors -- and, subsequently, three bars. Located in the basement, the Rathskeller is a traditional German bar, serving fine German lagers and wheat beers as well as select American beer, liquor, and German wines. From former German diplomats to mayors of Ann Arbor to college students to locals, the Rathskellar has been -- and continues to be -- a fine place to meet interesting people for excellent conversation and gooddrinks.

The main floor features our relaxed but elegant dining room and a smaller, but well-stocked, bar. Here you can find our excellent lunch and dinner cuisine, a friendly wait staff, and some of the last authentic German food in Ann Arbor. Naturally, we also feature some American classics and vegetarian items as well.

Our second floor, The Club Above, is home to seven nights per week of entertainment. Formerly a more traditional German room, the second floor has been renovated with French style colored cielings, a metallic decor, a sizeable stage, and a complete bar. Check our entertainment schedule for more information.
